Colour at dusk
Posted: November 18, 2012 Filed under: Uncategorized 11 CommentsI don’t do much painting at dusk but today I was near the lake at just the right time so I did a quick sketch in the car. It was harder than I imagined. The winter light changes so fast! In the span of 15 minutes (the time it took to put most of the information down) I went from being able to see my colours on my palette and on my paper to practically working blind. I had to darken the branches when I got home. It was a great exercise in speed painting.

Oh God… this is absolutely wonderful Shari. You captured the light, the intensity of the darkness… wow! Beautiful.
Thanks Jane! It’s a good exercise to be forced to work quickly.
Fantastic!!! You nailed it!
Thanks so much Angie!
i also love the geometry in your composition Shari!
Lots of triangles Mary. Thanks!!
Nice sketch… capturing that dusk feel really well… the gloomy buildings with the light sky behind. But, I am wondering why, when the light started to fade, you didn’t just reach into you sketching kit-bag and grab your head lamp… remember the one that you said that you were going to buy right after I suggested that it might help in these situations… have a look back at 1st May.
Oh yeah, that head lamp. I think I lent it to a miner friend of mine. I must remember to ask for it back after coal season.
Looks like a bit of yellow ochre as sky? Then a bunch of violet for the trees and road shadows.
Not yellow ochre because it is too opaque. It is a mix of gamboge and raw sienna. Gamboge on its own is too bright and the two mixed make a nice yellow.
And the violet is a mix of ultramarine and alizarin crimson.
