Value sketch for Walkway

Every time I go to the Jean Talon Market I notice these back alley structures — mostly houses with sheds and garages, and some gardens in between. But the most interesting one, by far,  is a two-storey shed with an outdoor walkways that leads up to the house. I hope to paint this sometime soon so I have been working out the values for it.

Doing these little value sketches helps me immensely to clarify what I want to do in the painting. At the same time I can eliminate unnecessary shapes that I feel will detract from the composition. And as always, if it works out, I will post it.

Can’t wait to see the colors in this one. The splash of light across the man’s shoulder really helps convey a heightened sense of motion.

  2. Interesting Shari. Most value sketches I see are all in pencil. I asume you sketch in pencil and then set the values with a gray/blue watercolor. Nice !

    • Yes Leslie, there are pencil lines underneath. I always used to do my value sketches in pencil but lately I have been using washes of Payne’s gray which I think work well.

This stands alone as a unique view. I think using the Payne’s gray rather than pencil, must also get you closer to the feel of watercolor you hope for in the final painting.
