On the Chao Phraya

The view across the Chao Phraya river to Thonburi is spectacular. Glittering, golden temples side-by-side with crumbling, ramshackle houses. A sketchers paradise, really. But the view that can’t be captured in pen because it changes so quickly is the flow of boat traffic on the water. Tourist boats chugging from dock to dock, giant barges (five or six chained in a line) pulled and followed by tugs, fancy hotel shuttles, and the noisiest of all — the sharp-nosed longtail boats that take you through the canals of Thonburi. Bangkok is hot, gritty and crowded so I didn’t sketch here as much as I had hoped but I’m glad I have at least one sketch of the river.

  5. Oops… meant to say bounds!

  6. Dear Shari,
What an amazing Biography of a place. Not just the painting, but your description was fantastic too. Your recent posts have sooo made me long to travel, well, anywhere 😀

But if I have to be an armchair traveller, I know I am in good hands.

Now that I have seen you create some paintings “live” in your Craftsy class, I find I look very closely, in a good way, at your blog posts, trying to determine which of the techniques you’ve showed us in class. It has really enriched my understanding of how to use watercolours immensely. Thank you for that.

I’m not done all the exercises yet, but Craftsy said you’d be available for a while longer, so please don’t give up hope on me. I just don’t have many good days to play on.

    Best
    Jess.
(Have you met Parka on this jaunt? That would be a lot of fun I think).

I looked up some of these places on Google Earth, adding another dimension to following along with your travels. Thank you for taking us on this journey. I enjoy enlarging the sketch and studying how you might have achieved such clarity with so many complex elements. BTW, what vitamins do you take? 🙂
