First colour
Posted: April 17, 2016 Filed under: Uncategorized 37 CommentsIt’s a joy to see people working in their yards this weekend. Cleaning up the remnants of last year’s gardens, making space for the green shoots poking up out of the ground, talking to neighbours over fences. I should probably be doing that too, but instead I sketched the first tiny bit of colour in my garden — my crocuses. It always seems like a miracle to me when something this delicate pops out of soil that was covered in snow less than a week ago. Sketched in a Pentalic sketchbook, 8″ x 5″.
Lovely painting. Thanks for giving the size.
Thanks Judy.
beautiful!
Thanks so much Jodi.
Gorgeous!
Thanks!
A truly beautiful painting.
Thanks so much Michael.
I felt that miracle today.
You illustrated it beautifully.
What a gift.
It was a bit of a miracle today, wasn’t it? Thanks for writing Monique.
Wonderful painting. Not wishing to be smug but we’re on buttercups and bluebells here!
Ah, bluebells. We never have those here but last year I saw the bluebell woods at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. Breathtaking! Lucky you.
These are fantastic! Philippe and I spent some time today planting flowers. Hehe…These are so beautiful! And love the background on the piece so much. Really love how you rendered it. Simply lovely. 😍
Thanks Charlie. I can’t wait to do a little gardening. Annuals can only be planted here after the third week in May, so we have a ways to go still. Perennials will be out in the nurseries soon!
Shari, I love your “effortless” sketches like this, that have so much life and vitality — WONDERFUL! Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks so much!
That’s much better than gardening 😉 Beautiful painting!
Sketching is always more fun than gardening!
Lovely painting Shari!
Thanks!
Shari– I marvel at your range of colors that you use– in particular your greens! You are such an inspiration. Can’t wait to take another class
Lisa Daniels
Thanks Lisa. I was thinking that I hadn’t used enough colour in this one! Looking forward to having you in another class. I was just telling a friend about Palmetto Bluff yesterday, and what a spectacular area it is. I described the view from your house…
Shari-
The offer is there anytime you want to come back –lots of room would love to have you! Wish I could see your recent sketch of the boat yard from the beginning! Have you ever put a sketch series from beginning to end on your blog
Absolutely beautiful! You’re an inspiration, Shari.
Thanks Randi. It was a great day in the garden.
Oh, my….I DO miss crocuses. We have a few bulbs down here int he deep south, but none so heart-warming as those tiny crocuses. Your painting does them justice, Shari.
Since they are the first out of the ground, they are a favourite, aren’t they? I can see why you miss them.
Lovely painting. It’s so amusing comparing the seasons in each place too. In Athens we get crocuses in January or at the latest February. They’re long gone… X Marina
It is funny to see. I can never believe it when I see daffodils coming out in Vancouver when we are still under two feet of snow in Montreal. Thanks for writing!
So very pretty
Thanks Sheree.
So fresh and sweet…..thank you Shari! Background really sets off the flowers. Inspiring for sure!
thanks Marilyn!
I like your style. Thanks for sharing this. It is beautiful.
Thanks Fred!
Probably one of my favorites…one of your simpler sketches but it teaches so much about background, composition, color (or is that colour!), and knowing when to stop! Thanks for sharing with your many fans.
Thanks so much for writing Stephen. Sometimes I forget to just slow down and draw the simpler stuff like this. It was a good reminder.
