Waiting areas
Posted: August 17, 2016 Filed under: Uncategorized 22 CommentsThere’s been a LOT of waiting around these past few weeks — trains, planes and hospitals mostly — but I’ve kept a Leuchtturm sketchbook in my bag with me. It’s one of the many sponsor items that we received in our goodie bag from the USk symposium in Manchester, and I love to try this stuff out when I get home. The paper in this book is thick, bright white and smooth, so perfect for water-soluble brush pen and light washes.
What do you use for the brushpen do you mean something like Tombow ? It also looks like additional blending with a regular waterbrush?

Hi,
It’s a Japanese brush pen. Sometimes I use a Pentel Pocket Brush like this: http://www.jetpens.com/Pentel-Pocket-Brush-Pen-for-Calligraphy/pd/1793
Today I was using this one: http://www.jetpens.com/Pentel-Standard-Brush-Pen-Tsumi-Tip/pd/2416
And then, yes, I blended with a water brush to get the tones.

Shari, these are wonderful. We don’t get to see your people very often, but you have a very deft touch for them. As to the paper you are using, is it thicker than the “ordinary” Leuchterm paper? Or can the ordinary paper take that kind of wash (I’m impressed if yes!)

This is the first Leuchttern book I’m using, except for one small book that I won in Singapore that had really thin recycled paper in it. This paper is quite thick and nice.

And ordinary paper would not be able to take that kind of wash.

Very impressive! Please write more about your reaction to the paper and how it influenced your sketching. Thanks.

Hi Frank,
I would love to write more about the paper and pen but these days I have less time than usual. So instead of writing in the comments area, as soon as I have a bit more time, I will do a post about the pen and the paper, ok?

Wonderful was the same word I was going to use. Do you mean the washes using the ink from the pen? Just this morning I did a thumb sketch with one–per your Craftsy course.

Hi Judy,
Yes, the grey washes are made from wetting the lines of the brush pen. Since the ink is water-soluble you can use a water brush which is filled with clear water and just grab some tone from that. When I have a bit more time I will do a post on how to use this pen.
So glad you are trying out exercises from the Craftsy course.

Some of my artist friends are using water soluble pencil with a brush pen. Exactly what water soluble pen are you using. I like the boldness with the wash.

Hi Donna,
I like water-soluble pencils too but this was a pen with a brush nib.

I like the boldness I am able to get with this too, and the varied line weight.

I never met a waiting room until 6 years ago..Bon courage.

Maybe you do know her. She had red hair, very straight, with a stylish cut.
As for Manchester, yes, it was hard not to buy everything. I had to hold myself back from the Rosemary table where they had all the beautiful brushes!

Shari,
I’m sorry you’re having to go thru all this with your loved one(s) but I’ve found in the past decade, this was one of the best ways to help endure the emotional and physical discomfort in the medical vortex – not to mention endless waiting always somewhere. Your studies are beautiful. Love them ! My prayers are with you & yours.

Hospitals are exhausting Jane. I am trying to take care of myself too and not be too worn out but it’s been difficult. I know you can relate.

Thanks for sharing these – was wondering how that lovely smooth paper would hold up to washes and now I know!
