Backyard cycle
Posted: April 29, 2017 Filed under: Uncategorized 19 CommentsIf you stand outside today, you can almost see — in a time-lapse kind of way — the buds bursting on the trees. I spent some time this morning raking up the last of the fallen oak and maple leaves from last autumn, but the reward at the end was to take out my sketchbook and sketch the new canopy of green that appeared. A bit of fall and a bit of spring at the same time. If I wait too long that tender green will be gone, so this is the week to capture it.

I love that spring green! Here in Ireland, we’re nearly past that stage already!
It won’t last long. Those light greens will change to dark green soon but I love this stage.
I love the look of your technique. Can you tell me what you do first to achieve it, pencil, ink or paint? I have been following you for quite a while and enjoy your style.
HI Carol. For this one I used ink first — no pencil at all — and then added colour. It is rare that I do it the other way around. If I paint first and then use ink I tend to outline the shapes an that makes for a very dull drawing. Very static.

It is so magical to watch the trees as those buds slowly open with the spring greens, yellows, and pinks. I love the texture in that big tree. Great job!

Just found this on my laptop. That is a magnificent tree. Is it an oak? There is an oak with a similar trunk outside our deck. As others have said, your paintings of trees are wonderful.
What pen did you use? I have tried the platinum carbon pen but it feels too scratchy for me. Still looking for one I like.
I did use the Platinum pen for this Judy. I guess you really have to find the right pen for your way of drawing. There are so many to choose from. I do have an oak in my yard but this one is a big old maple. The oak is the one that the wheelbarrow leans on.
