All the dogs

Last weekend we visited friends in the country. For two days, there were three dogs vying for our attention, and on the last day, we even had a fourth dog in the group to shake things up a bit.

I was determined to draw all of the dogs at some point over the weekend. Alice was first, because I know her so well, especially in her usual sleeping pose. Little Maya was second. She’s the senior in the group and is often curled up on the sofa. Also easy. The other two were more difficult to draw. Cleo is a very young and energetic dog so she doesn’t stay still much, especially since all these strange dogs were invading her territory. I could only manage a little scribble of her head before she scampered off. Juni was the last dog to arrive and also the most difficult to draw. I started first with the drawing on the right when she was sprawled out on the floor, but one of the other dogs started barking which disturbed her so I couldn’t add in her squat, muscular body. Her head in this drawing does not make sense without the rest of her body, so I drew her again, this time while she rested in someone’s arms. French Bulldogs are not easy to draw but I think the proportions are more accurate the second time around.

Dogs are so charming/disarming but your sketches are a delight. Woof!

What a nice drawing with Alice in the lead. Dogs are so hard to draw. But looked like a fun challenge.

Wiggly dogs and toddlers, the hardest things to draw in my view!

off-topic: Shari, I’m working on a painting with a lot of red in it, and I’m interested to know what your favorite “primary” reds are. I think you’ve mentioned Transparent Pyrrole Orange for mixing, or maybe Pyrrole Scarlet?

(The painting has an American flag, a stop sign, and a barn-red garage in it. My Winsor Red I find is too “blue” for mixing these things — I think I need a warmer, more cadmium red or scarlet color)

Ha, we used to have French Buldogs since I was six years old so that is a dog I can draw! If one is not bothered with the snoring, they are very sweet. Alas French Bulldogs are not allowed to breed anymore 🥲

Wonderful captures of the doggy troop, dear Shari.
I would have been sorely tempted to bend the ‘in situs’ rules and just grab a few snaps to help with finishing touches afterwards, but I’m so I’m impressed that you didn’t. Wow! And your Alice is the consummate ‘profesh’,isn’t she? ♥️

Thank you for sharing with us.

    Cheers!

  8. How fun to have four creatures to sketch. Nice to see!!

We have a cat who thankfully sleeps a lot! I’m able to catch him in a nodded off pose easily, IF I pick up my pen, markers or brush….and draw. Alice and Juni are my top picks. Surely if you had more time we would have seem more images.Variety is the spice of life…so good to see your doggy sketches! Thanks.
