Daffodils
Posted: March 6, 2024 Filed under: Uncategorized 18 CommentsLast week I bought a pot of tiny daffodils. They seemed to hold all the promise of spring. At first only one bud was half open, and I could see the tiniest glimpse of yellowish orange. Each day since then a few more flowers have opened. I’ve painted them several times — at first, just a quick sketch of the pot on my window sill…
…and then today, the open flowers in all their spring glory. I chose to paint them this time without the pot, imagining that this might be how they would be coming out of the ground in my garden. This second time is painted in direct watercolour (no pencil drawing) with a dagger brush, using a limited palette of a few yellows, a few blues and a little Cadmium Orange that was left over on my palette from yesterday’s clementine sketch.

I love them both. They are so different from each other. Is the second one done wet-in-wet? I’m working on that course right now.

I don’t know if you got my comment as there was no place to send it and then it was gone,. I will try again so forgive me if this is a duplicate. I mainly want to say that I appreciate seeing your doing these in 2 methods. I am struggling with this now. I enjoy direct painting more but then I miss the drawing and ink lines. I have tried the direct first and then adding the lines. Doesn’t work as well.

Daffodils are my favourite flower and yours are the first that I’ve seen this year. They are glorious! – I love the rich colours that you chose in order to present their ‘grand opening’ and all of their happy strokes – many thanks.
Absolutely beautiful! Spring flowers challenge us to carry hope into the day. Bulbs are scattered in our yard. Reminds us of how we live in different ways and times and places Your paintings are such uplifting gifts. Thank you so much

Nice going since I find that daffodils are too demanding, I mean
yellow-on-yellow, come on! Too bad you aren’t back here in Skagit the
fields of daffodils are glorious!
