Brought the pen but forgot the glasses
Posted: June 10, 2024 Filed under: Uncategorized 22 CommentsWe’re having some unseasonably cool weather so I sketched from my car this afternoon — just a quick stop on my way from here to there. I’ve been working in a new sketchbook that I bought exclusively for pen work. I am not embarrassed to say that I originally bought it for its cover. It’s beige linen and has Studio Ghibli characters from My Neighbor Totoro debossed in black on it. But now that I’ve been working in it, I’ve realized that the paper is nice too — very smooth and ideal for ink lines. As for my sketch, I brought along sunglasses instead of reading (and drawing) glasses by mistake, but I managed to be able to see enough of the main shapes to capture the falling down buildings at the four corners near here.

Perfectly done!
Thanks so much Beth!
Uh oh – since my nickname is Kiki, I may have to purchase the Kiki sketchbook when it’s available – which would give me more incentive to draw each day!
I love the line work here – still learning how to use more lines to create darker colors without making it look too messy and junky! I can see so much in your drawing – thanks for sharing!!!
I didn’t know your nickname with Kiki! I will have to remember that for next time! This is a nice book to draw in, if you decide to spring for it. And it’s hard covered which is always nice. Hope your summer is nice!
I confess, I had to look up Studio Ghibli. That’s definitely not on my radar. 😄
Lovely drawing. The lively lines give these buildings plenty of character. I’m glad you managed without the glasses. I’ve left home with the wrong ones many times!
I’ve left home without brushes, water, paints and once, even a sketchbook but I think this was the first time without glasses. And the first time I can read your comment in its entirety in a long time. Thanks Alison.
Way to go Shari LOL!!! I signed up for the wet on wet course, happy belated b’day, I’m LOVING this online course, learning so much!!!
Maureen, I’m so happy to hear that!! Enjoy!
As long as you see well enough to drive safely, I think you are doing just fine! Nice ink sketches!
I don’t need glasses for driving, yet!!
I love it! And, so understand about the glasses! Huge frustration.
Thanks Suzanne! Yes, I will be more careful next time. Very frustrating!!
Looks and sounds good. What weight is the paper? From the description at their site it appears to be 140 lb, is it or more? How has it responded to your watercolor use? Thanks for answering.
Frank B
Hi Frank. This is the info about the paper: Measures 7 x 9 inches, 128 pages, 140 GSM wood-free FSC-certified paper. I think it’s about 90 lb and not good for watercolour. I am using it just for ink. I have better book for watercolour.
Thank you for responding.

What a beautiful sketch with a limited view! That’s talent! What was your pen?
The pen is my fountain pen, my Pilot E95S. A very beautiful pen that was a gift from my family.
This looks fabulous, but I’m a believer that you could sketch just about anything with your eyes closed!
Denise
Haha, I don’t think so Denise. But thank you!!
Lovely sketch of the buildings! It looks like you did pretty well without your sketching glasses. I try to keep a spare pair in my car as well as having one in my purse and another pair in my backpack. You never know when you will need them. lol I’m enjoying seeing the new locations that are attracting you in your new area. Thanks for sharing them with us.
I’ve tried drawing and painting (just sketches) without my long-distance glasses on. It was an interesting experiment – helped simplify things, helped me arrange what you’ve called “spot relationships” in a previous blog post without getting distracted by my own ideas of what I was looking at.
Simple and nice sketch
