Late to the game

I only heard about this last week on the radio. My particular favourites on this list are the ones that occur around this time: fool’s spring, second winter, spring of deception, third winter and mud season. I think we are probably in fool’s spring right now. Which means there’s still time to paint the wheelbarrow with some snow on it.
I haven’t painted my old friend the broken wheelbarrow in many months. It was in a spot in the backyard that I couldn’t see from my window, but I fixed that yesterday. I put on my boots and went out there to move it, carefully, to a new spot. It’s not as good as the old spot in my previous yard because it’s up against a skinny pine, not a grand old oak, but it will do. It’s in a forested corner of my yard which makes a good backdrop and hopefully makes up for the lack of a big tree.
I sketched this on hot press paper using a Lamy pen that’s filled with copper ink, and added watercolour after. If you want to learn a bit about this process, have a look at my newest online course, “Sketching Techniques with Pens and Inks“, on sale this week.

How Beautiful!!!! Can’t wait to try the ink!
I really love this one! The ink looks so nice. And the paint colors just compliment it wonderfully.
I have never heard the 11 seasons thing! Brilliant and so true! I just started your new online course, as always it’s fabulous. I’m particularly enjoying the parts about one point perspective, great lessons!!!
Love this version of the wheelbarrow! I’m taking my laptop on vacation and doing the Sketching Techniques with Pens and Inks while my husband golfs. Can’t wait to try these techniques in Hawaii!
Mary, that’s definitely the best thing to do while you wait for the golf game to be over. I hope you post some Hawaiian ink drawings!
So beautiful. Love all the pure color!
Laura, thank you!!

Nice to see your old friend again!
It was nice for my to see my old friend too. And great adage. Thanks for that!
Love your old wheelbarrow! Just signed up for your pen and ink class and I’m looking forward to organizing and testing all my pens and inks! Miss seeing you. Maybe someday. ❤️ Paula
Paula, I miss seeing you too. You should come up to Montreal!! We can sketch in pen and ink!!
Love this!!
Wendy, thanks!!
Shari, good morning!! I love your wheelbarrow!!!! I have a wheelbarrow which was my Fathers. It is small and I can handle it…Mine is yellow and am thinking I will have to practice drawing it!!
Grace, you definitely need to draw it. Especially if it has sentimental value.
Different spot or not, I think it’s lovely.
Debra, thanks for having a look. Much appreciated!
Ahhhhh….lovely! I really like this one!
Bernadette, thanks!!
Where is its friend?
Sharon, thanks for remembering the friend!! It’s on the other tree. I was feeling a bit nostalgic about my old oak tree and decided to sketch this one on its own for a change. But don’t worry. I will never get rid of the green friend.
I’m so glad to see that your old wheelbarrow has a comfy spot to relax. I like the use of the copper ink for the lines. It goes perfectly with the rusty look of the wheelbarrow!
How wonderful to view everyday!
