August Echinacea

That’s why in this week’s bouquet, the blooms are all a little past their prime. But that makes them so much more interesting to paint. I get droopy petals, curled leaves and darks where there should be brights. My drawing was done with water-soluble ink and watercolour was added on top of that. Here’s another bouquet that I painted the same way.

Looking at this, I would have no idea about droopy, dead and dark. To me this is a beautiful ‘almost autumn’ bouquet. I think it is lovely, Shari.

Wonderful selection of colors. Were the watercolor inks with a pen or by brush? Is there a brand you would recommend?
Hi Elaine. The ink was in a Lamy Safari pen, and it is Diamine Ancient Copper Ink. If you have taken my Pens and Inks course, I use it several times in my demos. I love that ink. Hope you are doing well!!

Beautiful!! I’d love to know what brown (water soluble) ink you used – it’s lovely in this painting. I like to use Lamy Sepia brown, but it is very water soluble (almost too much). Thanks for sharing!!
This is gorgeous. I love the unifying, warming effect of the ink!
The flowers are rendered so beautifully. Gives one the impression of each plant species in the bouquet. I can almost smell the purple ones – I think they are called agastache? Anyway, beautiful .

Beautiful colors in this bouquet! Thanks for the reminder to sketch with my Ancient Copper ink. I get in a rut using my standard Platinum Carbon and forget to experiment. It’s now sitting on my desk as a reminder 🙂
