Left on the vine

September is the most beautiful month in Montreal. Cool nights, warm days, lots of sun. Today I brought a folding stool out into the garden to sketch what’s left of the cherry tomatoes in my very tiny vegetable patch. Mostly it’s just a mass of curling brown leaves and the last of the fruit on the sagging vines — a complex tangle of bursting juiciness and desiccated dryness. Painted on a block of Milford CP paper, using mostly Sap Green, Sepia, Hansa Yellow and Raw Sienna. With a little red thrown in for the tomatoes.
