Montreal workshop day 2

There were some unexpected events that occurred during day 2 of my Montreal workshop. Everything started off well as the group gathered at Macdonald farm in Ste. Anne de Bellevue. I set up my easel at a quiet dead-end, did a drawing for my demonstration and was about to start painting when a big tractor went by and the driver asked us all to move because they were doing silage (had to look that up when I got home!). So we all had to move to the other side of the road and then I couldn’t see the silos and barn I had just drawn and had to paint from memory. To top it off the tractors went by our spot many times during the day, churning up dust and creating lots of noise. Besides that there was some digging going on in another spot nearby and that also created lots of dust and noise. But in the end everyone did amazing work. I never really finished my silo painting but here’s the afternoon demo of ink and wash in my Moleskine.

The Hopper

Here’s most of the group at the end of the day with their silo paintings. We experimented with a wet-in-wet technique and the students had a limited palette so there were lots of pink and yellow skies.

Hello everyone :: I had a great time today. Your drawings look amazing and thank you Shari for everything that you have taught us and I will attemps to apply this new knowledge in my future paintings, for years to come (it will take me years to get to your level though) so I am confident that in 20 years I should be at par ;-))) Yeah!

    • It was great having you there Jane. It’s too bad you left before the group photo and before I had a chance to see your final painting. So glad you tried the wet-in-wet even though it was challenging.

Congratulations. Looks like you have had a successful first workshop.
And I learned about silage today… I thought it had something to do with the other end of the cow… which just shows how far removed I am from my dairy-farming grandparents.

    • I think it was a successful workshop and everyone took something away that they can use in the future, hopefully. And I learned that no matter how well you try to prepare in terms of choosing your locations, you have to adapt to the unexpected, like yesterday’s silage.

Sounds like a fun day (in more than one way) Ah! the joys of sketching on location. Wish I could have been there and hope that I do get a chance to see you in action in SD!

    • Hi Liz. We will sketch together for sure in SD! It was a great workshop in many ways — great group, great weather for painting and we all learned a lot. See you soon!!!
