Between the doors
Posted: March 14, 2013 Filed under: Uncategorized 15 Comments »Taking to the streets with my sketchbook has brought me many wonderful surprises — meeting new people, discovering parts of Montreal that I didn’t know existed, connecting with other artists — that have changed my life in the past year. But I wasn’t expecting that it would bring new career options. One of the new opportunities that has come about because of sketching is that I’m in the process of illustrating a children’s book. The author of the story watched me drawing in the market last fall and approached me with the idea.
I wasn’t sure I would be able to do this kind of project but the illustrations are coming along fine. I can’t post any work in progress, but hopefully when the book is published I will be able to show some of the illustrations on the blog. One thing that I can tell you is that the book is full of illustrated details from the streets of Montreal, hence my interest in sketching bricks and doorways today. I hope to use lots of bits and pieces from the last year of drawings in the book.

Shari,
This is just great! How exciting for you.I will look forward to seeing the book illustrations
when it is published.
I am excited to show them to you Linda. It’s been a long process but really exciting.
Congratulations Shari!
Thanks Julie.

So wonderful that your talents are being acknowledged!
Thanks so much Mrs. P.
That is so exciting..and motivating:-)
Love the doors..especially the left one of course.
Thanks Monique. Yes, it is very exciting for me.
I love the intense, vivid colour in this sketch. And the vivid personality of the doors that comes through.
Alison, I used lots of Thalo blue in this. It’s a colour I don’t use very often because it is so staining but you just can’t make this mix with any other combo.
Lovely doors!! I love the glass work!! And congrats to your illustration job!!!
I love how sketching every day has lead to this open door to illustrate a children’s book! This is really exciting, I am happy for you!
Maybe I should give it a try – doing a watercolor sketch every single day I mean – and hope that it opens doors, too
Monika, I should have called my post “Opening Doors”!! Wish I had thought of that!
Hahaha, that play of words was not even intended! How about sketching more bricks between other doors tomorrow?
