In the mirror

The Mexican painter Frida Kahlo was bedridden for most of her life due to a terrible accident that occurred while she was riding a bus. She was in a full body cast for months and many of her self-portraits were painted from her bed. Thankfully I wasn’t in a bus accident but I did have to paint from bed today because of a back injury. And my sketch does have a mirror in it but thankfully it’s not a self-portrait.

Only you could be flat on you back and still be able to produce a painting like this.

Thanks for posting even from your bed.

I’m sorry that you injured your back. You still managed to make a really lovely painting. I really like all the verticals in contrast with the floor.
When my back bothers me, I usually lie on my side. I certainly hope you didn’t have to paint from that angle!

wow, nothing will stop you from painting!

I hope your back settles down quickly. maybe you should be doing some regular paintingyoga-sketchacise….also known as stretch-a-sketch.

Shari, you are an inspiration. I would never think I could paint from bed, nor that there would be anything in my bedroom worth painting. Again you’ve shown that even in limited circumstances, there is always something to capture our interest and make beautiful in the process.

    Shari,
Another great sketch with those “clean” colors!
I hope your back feels better soon.
And I hope you share a few color mixing secrets this
    summer in Portland!

  7. Wishing you speedy recovery and agree that its true, many interesting things could be drawn from one spot. I like one russian artist, Dmitri Mitrohin, who grew old and sick and sketched simple things around his bed: medication, fruits, window. Really cool

I love through the door way paintings. They are always such a fascinating slice of life combined with a sense of depth, of traveling into a painting.

    • Thanks. That one doesn’t have great memories for me since I was in a lot of pain at the time, but I would like to revisit the ideas of working with the mirror someday.
