New York rooftop view

I held a workshop in New York City and upon my return, spent a full day drawing at C2 Montreal. A full report of the workshop is coming soon, as well as a post with the C2 drawings, but in the meantime, here’s a sketch I did from the rooftop of my hotel in New York. I try to draw this every time I go to New York. Here’s another drawing of the same view from a few years ago.

Agree with Fred’s comments! With all the digital innovations, isn’t it great to know that nothing can compare with that human touch – the direct eye/hand pathway and interpretation.

That is so true Gayle. I try to teach that to my college students too, because all they know is digital. I make them incorporate human elements into graphic design, but it’s often like pulling teeth. It’s much easier to find a Google image than to create something yourself. Very frustrating!

Nice! I also like to draw the view from hotels. You’re not doing any workshops in Europe any time soon, I suppose?

I will be in Galway, Ireland in July for a workshop with Roisin Cure and Marc Taro Holmes. After that I’ll be in Manchester at the Urban Sketchers Symposium. Are either of those close to where you are? I believe the Galway workshop is full but we have had a few cancellations recently. There may still be some spots at the symposium as well, but my workshops are full.

Pretty close Tim. This was in Soho, looking up from 6th Ave towards Varick and Hudson. A bit of a ways to Chelsea, but not that far.

I love your use of color in buildings. I do a lot of buildings but still striving for the liveliness you get.Do you try to come close to the real colors or use your imagination?

This was a combo of real and imagined Judy. I like to let the colours from one building run into the next. I was working quickly too, because it was late in the day.

Being a New Yorker– makes me just love this sketch for so many reasons. Okay you may kill me but I am trying to see/find where the horizon line would be? Can you help me once again!

Hi Lisa,
Since I was high up, my eye level (and the horizon line) was somewhere in the middle of the sketch. It is where all the horizontal lines are straight across the page, about halfway down the reddish building. Some of the buildings were below me and some went up higher than my eye level. Finding that line is even harder when you are looking at things from above.

Loving that you treat this so much like pattern, with different colors to differentiate buildings and yet how you let the color of one building leak into the next… I can almost see you painting it!
