Place d’Armes
Posted: November 2, 2016 Filed under: Uncategorized 19 CommentsI was a bit early for a meeting in Old Montreal today, but with only about half an hour to sketch I realized it would be overly ambitious to work in colour. I haven’t done a pencil sketch in a long time but figured I would probably have enough time to at least get some shape and tone down before the meeting. Using the James Richards method of putting the people in first, I drew the two guys on the left having a smoke and a coffee, and then added in the tour guide telling two ladies about the history of Place d’Armes. The statue of Maisonneuve was next, then with only a short time left I added in the shape of the buildings in the background and off to the meeting I went.
This is great and thanks for introducing me to another wonderful artist.I read today Old Montreal will host a Marché de Noel in December..should be beautiful

I haven’t heard about the Marche de Noel, but I bet it will be special. Glad to introduce you to Jim Richards. He has a great Craftsy class and a book too.

Kudos. well done, Jane, it is good to have your share this with us. i look forward to having that presence of mind sometime soon. Sincerely ,i do mean thank you; just now the best I can do is sketch a tree let alone a person on the move. You are right; always sketch the moving target first.

Hi Shari – lovely sketch – I have always been partial to pencil! With just a few details you capture the sense of the place.

This is just a small mechanical pencil with a B lead, 005. Nothing too fat for this.

People first, yes! Did you find this easier, or just different to develop?

I found this easier Gil. The two main groups of people stood there for quite a while so it was a lot easier to sketch them than if they were walking by. I didn’t think about too much. Just saw them, drew them in and added the buildings around them. It’s probably good I didn’t have much time to think about it.
