Turbulent sky

This is the perfect week for sketching clouds. It’s an activity that’s a good distraction from being depressed about why the warm weather hasn’t arrived in Montreal yet. The best place to see this turbulent sky is near Lac St. Louis, if you can find a spot where the high water line has gone down a little. When I paint these big skies I always add a little warmth near the horizon line, usually with a diluted wash of Raw Sienna, and my starter mix for the clouds is Cerulean Blue with the tiniest dab of Alizarin Crimson. Sketched from my car, in the rain, in a Handbook Travelogue Watercolour journal, 16″ x 8″.

Awesome! We are also getting some those clouds in the Maritimes. Appreciate the tip about the warming effect of raw sienna – I see that’s been the missing ingredient in my latest sketching attempts.

I have been lovin the cloud formations I see here in Ohio this spring . It’s a gorgeous day and I was just heading out to paint or try to paint my peony bushes. After seeing this painting of yours, I intend to paint a blue sky dominant painting instead. My peony bushes will wait.
Thanks for always giving such inspiring art to strive for. I appreciate it.

Having trouble ordering your new DVD but I will keep trying.

    • Thanks so much Bernadette. I hope your sky is gorgeous but maybe not as turbulent as mine.
I did ask Craftsy for help with purchasing the DVD. I know the link works because others have purchased it.
Here is the response I got. Please try this:

I cannot put crafty app on my iPad. I need IOS 9 but don’t have that. Tried to use my husbands iPad ….because his email does not subscribe to the blog…can’t get the reduced price. Rosanna Dana was right, “it’s always something…”
And…you are right about the clouds over Ohio. I’ll have to sit at a flat land space on a cloudy day to paint.

      • Well the DVD seems like it would be right for you. I hope when you contact Customer Support they can help you.

I like the colours and the dark blue water really helps to showcase the lovely range of colours in the clouds above.

There is a dreamy look to it, a magically dreamy look. Makes one feel happy.

  9. No clouds in Washington, DC today, so I’ll indulge in the clouds of this little sketch instead. As always, really nice work!
