539 Main
Posted: June 4, 2024 Filed under: Uncategorized 21 CommentsThis morning I painted the Hudson History Garden from a new viewpoint. Last week I sat right in the garden but this morning I set up my easel facing the house on Main Road. I had read that the giant Black Walnut tree behind it was one of the biggest of its kind in Quebec, and I wanted to make sure I included it in my watercolour.
I love to capture light on buildings, and one of the things about getting to know a new area is getting to understand the light at different times of day. When I painted in Pointe Claire Village for all those years, I knew where to set up to catch the morning light on the yellow house, which I sketched in all seasons.
Early this morning, the light was just right on the Victorian house at 539 Main. An hour later the house was almost fully in shade. Much less interesting. This will help me as I find different places to sketch along Main Road this summer. And I will be watching that Black Walnut as the seasons change, since I am also on the lookout for a tree to replace my favourite tree this autumn.

Looks like a lovely place to sketch. Thinking you maybe used Naples Yellow for the house … but still trying to work out the shadow mix?
It’s a wonderful place to sketch. A very friendly village. I did use Naples Yellow for the house, with a bit of Raw Sienna mixed in. My shadow mix is Cerulean Blue, Carbazole Violet and a bit of yellow to dull it down. All very diluted of course.
Hi Shari,
Did something happen to that wonderful Maple? I hope you are just ready for a change of scene and that it’s ok!
The maple is still there but I moved!
Oh that’s right! I’m glad it’s ok and that you found a new tree you like!!!
Your new town appears to be a wonderful resource for your sketches. Which color blends did you use for the greens?
Elaine White
That’s a huge tree!
Wonderful!
Love that touch of orange🙌
Lovely new favorite tree and a nice contract in color with the beautiful house. Don’t know if I am too early or too late but I wish you a very happy birthday! Couldn’t resist the offer so I bought another course. No time to paint right now but there will be time in the future! Thanks!
Contract = Contrast 😁🌷
Beautiful
Love this sketch of the house! How fun that there were two buildings that made such great separate sketches. It will be interesting to see your sketches of both at different times of the day..and different seasons too. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for posting this, a great reminder about including light and shadow when we make decisions about composition.
One of my faves of yours EVER!
Hi Shari
When my family moved to Kitchener in the late sixties, there was a newly built hotel not far from Cityhall called ‘Inn of the Black Walnut’.
The hotel’s strikingly new architecture was impressive, but I found the name so hauntingly mysterious. It made me wonder what a Black Walnut looked like.
Thanks for answering today – so glorious! I am looking forward to seeing more of it, in another light 😉
Cheers, Chris
Beautiful I love the Victorian house, the colors and lighting! You captured the scene really nicely!
Thanks so much Carolina!
Such a lovely house and yard. Your style continues to amaze me. Walnut trees are so fine. I will be looking for leaf changes as the seasons progress.
Thanks so much Sherry! I will be painting that tree in all seasons, I suspect.
Gorgeous sketch as always Shari! Love that immense black walnut- can’t wait to see it’s glorious colour this fall. Blazingly yellow, I should think -we have some here on the west coast, from seeds gathered in Ontario years ago.
Iona, I have no idea what it will look like in the fall but I suspect gorgeous! Thanks for having a look!
