Posted: February 13, 2026 Filed under: Uncategorized 12 CommentsI’ve been keeping up with a promise to myself to draw more people on location. I just discovered a few airport sketches from our trip to Arizona in January as well, so thought I’d share those as well.

I also did the quick one below in Tim Horton’s this morning. I seem to always pick sad sack looking men to draw.
These are both in my tiny Etchr hot press sketchbook, using my Preppy pen. It really has become a favourite pen for quick sketches. It glides beautifully over the smooth paper plus I like the very fine nib for putting in light crosshatching. I look forward to spring when everyone I draw is not wearing a puffy jacket.

This would make a good course – how to draw people perhaps.
Jeanne, I have been thinking about this. I would love to do a course on sketching people! It’s definitely on my long list of courses I want to produce.
Always a challenge to quickly sketch people, but you seem to handle it with ease. Maybe “sad sack” guy needed a doughnut?
Denise, you are so right. I am pretty sure “Sad Sack” guy needed a donut. I should have bought him one!
Wondering when drawing a figure, where do you start? Do you begin w/ a gesture then work to finish?
HI Bernadette,
When I draw the figure, I start with the shoulders, usually. It’s harder if I start with the head. If I can get the right angle of the shoulders, then I usually can capture the posture and then fit the head in after. There are exceptions to that rule but starting there is what has helped me most in figure drawing.
Puffed jackets are maybe easier to draw than muscles! 😀. I use the Hahnemuhle Nostalgie sketchbook. Not as expensive as the Etchr. Only 8 euros for an A6 and very smooth paper. It was laying on my shelf for a few years and now I started using it.
HI Frieda, Yes, the ETchr book is expensive. I probably bought it to do small watercolour or gouache sketches but ended it using it for ink. I’m sure the Hahnemuhle is wonderful for ink too and of course, much less expensive!
Is the Preppy Pen a fountain nib pen — and not a Ball point? So I was wondering that you may have to when using it — use only down strokes — where with a ball point – you can draw strokes UP and down. P.S. Love your people sketches!
HI Irma,
The preppy is a fountain pen but I can make strokes in any direction I want. And it’s nicer than a ballpoint because the ink flows really well.
Glad you like the sketches! Thanks for having a look.
I’m enjoying your ongoing people drawings, it’s true, lots of sad sacks these days . The sun came out and it was above freezing today where I live and everyone was out and in a good mood! Maybe that’s what folks need, a bit of warmth from the sun. I love Preppy pens too, especially the blue ones, and I’m going through them like crazy!
Maureen, I’m glad you like the preppy pens! I hope it’s warming up where you are. We had some days that were above zero last week and that was really nice. I can’t wait to wear shoes outside. I am sick of my winter boots!
