Brick house
Posted: June 10, 2016 Filed under: Uncategorized 19 CommentsIt was a busy week with not much time for sketching, plus the blustery weather was more like late November than early June. Summer is back today so I set out to sketch the trees in their full leafed-out glory. I like to mix natural elements with architecture (helps with both scale and composition), which is why this house on Lakeshore Road caught my eye. Surrounded by trees and situated across the street from a parking lot made it the perfect subject. Sketched in a Fluid Field Watercolour Journal, 8″ x 8″.

Oh those glorious spring greens! Love the intimate setting of the home with spots of sunlight. Awesome sketch, as usual Shari! This morning, I’d just driven by one of the older residential sections of Saint John, up on a hill and surrounded by trees and was thinking: “This would make for a great sketch!” and you beat me to it….and did a much better job than I could. You inspire me to just get out and get at it.
Get out and get at it! I envy that you have houses on a hill. In my neighbourhood everything is very flat but if you have hills you can get those interesting views looking up or looking down. It’s your turn to sketch a house and some trees.
Love this, Shari. I just finished your Craftsy course, and it was great! What color(s) did you use for the light-green grass in this sketch?
Hi Lori,
Glad you liked the class. For this light green I used Hansa Yellow Medium mixed with Sap Green. It seems to give that light spring green that we see at this time of year.
Love this! Those greens! Lovely!
Thanks so much Sheila.
Shari,
You always make me feel like I’m there – sun, shade, breezes or even imagining smells & it’s a delightful journey whenever revisited.
Thank you again.
Soni
Thanks Soni. I started out by facing a scene of boats on the lake but the sun was in my eyes so I turned around and painted the house. You’re right about the breeze. There was a beautiful one from the lake.
I love this and love your work. You have inspired me by your classes to get back into watercolor and I am truly enjoying it. I have the same reaction as Soni that I feel like I am “there” in your paintings.
Thanks so much Judy. I always love to hear when people get back into painting.
Great shadows on the building. Nicely done!
Thanks so much Joan.
Very pleasant to look at !
Much appreciated Andy!
Beautiful!
Thanks!
I agree! The mix of architecture and nature is wonderful. This is a beautiful painting, Shari! 😍
Thanks Charlie!
I love your wires!
