Red bouquet in gouache
Posted: February 8, 2019 Filed under: Uncategorized 25 CommentsAfter painting these red blooms in watercolour and with digital tools in Procreate on the iPad, I gave it a try today in gouache, on some Fabriano hot press paper. It was really hard to get the bright colours — especially the magentas — because gouache is so flat. But painting the three versions was a great exercise in looking, in mixing colours, in thinking about values, and in working from light to dark and then dark to light. Glad to have these grey days in Montreal which leave me no choice but to paint indoors.
Thanks for sharing Shari. I have some gauche but haven’t tried them out yet. Your flowers look lovely. Keep warm.
Thanks April. As a change from using watercolour, I really appreciate gouache. The opacity and flatness of it is really quite beautiful. You just have to make sure you use some old brushes because you will ruin good watercolour brushes with it.
The color looks great to me. I love gouache. A bit of a learning process but that is the challenge. Anyway, all 3 flower paintings are super.
Thanks Judy. It is a bit of learning process but that’s good for the brain, right?
The colors are brilliant
The colours are surprisingly bright for gouache. That was fun to see.
Shari, I always enjoy your images and description. Stay warm!
Thanks!
All three paintings are beautiful. I love to paint flowers in oil. Watercolor is a beginning for me. I have trouble mixing watercolors so I practiced your colors just for the fun of learning.
Ghislaine, that is the best way to learn. I practice with people’s colours all the time.
Could this be the same bouquet? The flowers are so full of life and color! I especially love the vase transparency, often difficult to capture. The painting is beautiful, as are the others, each so unique in technique and media.
This is the same bouquet. It has lasted almost three weeks. It’s still on my kitchen counter giving me joy every day.
I can’t help but really admire your hardworking showing up to the task every day! Just remarkable! And thank you for sharing it!! 💌
And thank you for writing Kristiina.
You keep all of us going!!! Comparing the Procreate to actually holding a brush and mixing colors, do you get the same tactile satisfaction? Sometimes it’s very satisfying to get messy.
That’s a good question Donna. I was missing the feeling of actually drawing on paper while on the iPad but recently I purchased a screen protector which simulates the feeling of paper. It makes the experience in Procreate much more pleasant. As for the mess, can’t say I miss it when I am on the iPad. And the drawings dry so quickly too : )
It turned out LOVELY !!
Thanks Diane.
Very nice work……………grats
Thank you Ruben.
Wow I love how you’ve made the colours so deep and glowing. I’ve never used gouache myself so it’s interesting to see how vibrant you have made the colours. Thank you.
Isy, I was surprised by how vibrant some of the colours were. Of course if you mix in white or black you lose that, but straight out of the tube they surprised me with their brightness.
Oh, the color in these last two warm my heart! I am tired of winter colors so pops of color are so important. I love looking and analyzing the difference between your watercolor version and the gouache version. Both are lovely!!
Thanks Joan. I am tired of the winter colours so, and am always on the lookout for ways to introduce colour into my sketches. I think you do too. It’s a long, grey winter in Montreal…
