Fishing shacks

There’s too much to sketch – the boats in the harbour, the old fisherman’s houses and the famous “Motif No. 1” building that I painted last year. As is often the case, the best views are the ones that surprise you as you turn a corner. These little shacks didn’t seem half as interesting in the morning but later in the day the light changed and there was a good shady spot between a candy store and a sunglasses shop.
Milton Glaser once told me on a flight from Denver to New that his notion of an artist was someone who could do the detail such as you have in the shingles – and never feel he has to hurry. He drew a little crosshatch on my sketch pad and said, “Stuff like that. I could do it for hours.” What a guy.
You met Milton Glaser? Lucky guy. I hope you kept the cross hatch!

I’ve been wanting to ask if your line work is done with a pen or brush, and if you lay down lines or color washes first?
Mostly I use a micron pen first and then add in the wash. But in this case I added the detail of the shingles last.
