Mother’s day
Posted: May 11, 2014 Filed under: Uncategorized 10 CommentsCapturing yellows is always one of the biggest challenges for me, especially the parts of the flower in shadow. Sometimes I add purple to dull and darken the yellow and that seems to work. Today I veered towards the green. Sketched in a Stillman & Birn Beta Series, 5.5″ x 8.5″, using Azo Yellow, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue and Alizarin Crimson.
Mum’s daffodills! Happy Mother’s Day! Am not a ‘green’ person so my preference is the blue/purple spectrum for shadow. It’s an ‘odd’ colour green, so amazing in real life and yet when I photograph it, I’m often repelled by how vibrant it looks. You do super greens (tho not keen on this one) I’ve seen them and am full of admiration by you manage them. So my enthusiasm greatly tempered by that. Hope you don’t mind my comments…I do look and I do think.

Alizarin Crimson – one color that I have a soft spot for. An illustration teacher of mine back at FIT showed us how to mix alizarin crimson with out darkest blues to create rich, deep dark hues in oil paints.
It is a great colour and it’s almost always in my dark mixes.
